| | | Q. How long will it take before you look at my system?
A. We look at your system as soon as you walk in the door. This allows us to quickly evaluate your computer to give you a rough idea of what you are looking at in repair costs. The initial Evaluation is always FREE. Systems that will not boot-up or “power-on” will require a more in depth evaluation and will incur a testing fee; desktops $59.99 and laptops $85.00. The testing in these cases my take several days, but your system is never put on a ‘waiting list’. This way once the system is evaluated we can give you the estimated repair cost and once we get approval from you (no work is done without prior approval from the customer) – the repairs can be completed as soon as possible to have your system back to you; in the short amount of time.
Q. Is there ever a waiting list?
A. No, we look at you systems as soon as you bring it in. We never put systems on a waiting list. This ensure faster turn around time and back to you in the least possible time.
Q. Do I need to make an appointment?
A. No, appointments are never necessary since all systems are evaluated as soon as you walk in the door. Once the work is approved by you, the repair begins immediately. The only delay would be if special order parts are needed, this may delay the repair a couple of days. But as soon as the parts arrive the repair will be completed as soon as possible so the system can be returned to you.
Q. How long will it take to fix my computer?
A. in all cases an evaluation of the system is required to get an idea of what is actually wrong with your computer. The initial Evaluation is always free. This will let us boot up the system and get a rough idea of what is wrong and allow us to give a rough estimate of the cost to make repairs. After we get approval from you, repairs begin immediately.
Q. I have spyware and/or viruses, how long will it take to clean up my computer?
A. There are several factors that will add to the time it takes to repair your system. 1. Overall speed of your computer 2. How badly your system is infected 3. The number of users you have on your computer 4. If the system does not boot-up completely the operating system will need to be repaired as well. Clean up usually take a couple of days, since spyware and viruses slow your computer down and make the repair process go even slower. Some viruses are so bad that your computer’s hard drive will have to be physically removed from the system and scanned on another computer. (To ensure the cleaning process) For laptops this process is more involved since they take more time to remove the hard drive.
Q. Will I loose my files, picture, email, etc.?
A. No, the general cleanup process does not require removal of any data. If your system is so badly infected that the technician suggests reloading the operating system clean. We can save personal files, picture, data, email, favorites, etc. Depending on the amount of data and number of users, there may be an hourly charge for the transfer. This cost will be disused with you before the system is repaired.*
Q. What band of computers do you repair?
A. All makes and models of PC, Laptop, and Network Server that are windows based. We do not deal with apple computers or laptops?
Q. My computer is making a clicking noise, should I have it looked at?
A. Yes, in some cases that noise is the hard drive armature hitting the drive wall. This usually means your drive is on its way out and soon you data may be unrecoverable. This is usually signified by number of problems, read/write errors or your computer displaying “file xxx missing. Your best bet is to have it evaluated by one of our experienced technician to see if it really is the drive and if so, to copy the drive and/or data before it is lost for good. Continually using the system in this state may make the data unrecoverable, and hasten the overall drive failure.
Q. I think I have spyware, is there a good spyware removal program out there?
A. there are several good programs that remove spyware from your system, but there is not one program that removes all spyware. When we do our spyware and virus remove process on your system we use a number of programs to scan your computer. In many cases infected files have to be removed manually and in more extreme cases the drive is removed from the system and repeatedly scanned by several antivirus removal utilities. If you know your system is infected, continual usage usually will increase the infection and will results in a lengthier repair time.
Q. What do I need to bring in for you to look at my computer?
A. if you have a desktop system, just the system itself. No keyboard, Mouse, cables, etc. If you have a laptop, we will need the power cord; since almost all laptop power cords differ with make, model, and manufacture of laptops. For desktops, if you are having trouble with a printer, we will need the printer, power cord, and the cord that connects the
What to bring in: - Desktop issues: just the computer, no cords or cables - Laptop issues: we will need the laptop and the power cord, since most laptops have proprietary power adapters. - Printer issues: we will need the printer, power cord, and cable that connects your printer to the computer. - Wireless/Router issues: router and the power cored (no network cables) - Monitor issues: The monitor and all cables connecting to it, some monitors have proprietary power adapters and we will need that to test as well.
Q. I think my hard drive is bad; I removed it from my computer, can you test it?
A. most of the time the hard drive is not the issue and if it is removed from the system we can not test it to see what the actual problem is. If the unit is bad, connecting it to another system may possibly damage that system. It is always better to bring the system in for overvaluation and testing.
Q. I need to add memory to my system, how much will it cost?
A. In order to give a quote for memory we will need to know what kind of memory your system will accept and how high the memory can be upgraded to. In some cases the computer or laptop is limited to how much memory it will recognize; which is determined by the manufacture. Some systems have limited number of memory slots and to upgrade; the existing memory will have to be removed - then replaced with the expanded memory. There is no ‘general pricing’ for memory, the cost is determined by the type of memory and availability. The best choice is to bring in the system, which will be looked at when you bring it in, and one of our technicians will see what memory it takes and what is already installed in the system. This way an actuate price can be quoted for the type and amount of memory you require.
Q. Do you buy used computers equipment?
A. No, most used equipment will not run the available operating systems; like vista. The cost to upgrade some equipment is more than the cost of purchasing a new machine. We do, how ever, offer a trade-in value for upgraded computers parts. If you have your current system upgraded by Fairport Computers, the leftover part (if in working condition) may be applied to the overall cost of the upgrade to that system.
Q. Do your purchase used computers parts or components?
A. No, since used parts may have a reduced life cycle; it is almost impossible to know the over quality and life cycle left for that parts – in essences it would be almost impossible to warranty to the next buyer.
Q. Do you sell used laptop?
A. Rarely, since most people will discard or sell their laptop due to a functional issues. It would not be possible to warranty or even repair for a reasonable cost to resell at a good price.
Q. My laptop will not turn on after the battery ran out and plugged it, what could be wrong with it?
A. If your power adapter is still functional, you may have a broken DC adapter on you laptop motherboard. This is the receptacle that the adapter plugs into on your laptop. For most laptops this is an involved process since the DC connector is soldered to the motherboard of your laptop. There are two options for repair, one would be to replace the motherboard completely and the other would be to replace the DC connector by unsoldering the old one and re-soldering a new one to the motherboard. In both cases the laptop will have to be fully dissembled and reassembled. This process takes an average of about 2-6 hours depending on the make and model of the laptop. Motherboards can run about $250-$450+; new and used, which does not include hourly labor for the disassembly and reassembly process with testing of the system.
Q. I have already had my DC Connector on my laptop’s motherboard replaced, I broke it again – is it covered under any type of warranty?
A. No, the connector usually breaks under misused or pulling and/or yanking of the power adapter cord when plugged into the laptop. This is considered misuse and is not covered under any warranty implied or otherwise.
Q. My hard drive died can you recover any of my data?
A. Depending on the state of the hard drive we may be able to recover some or maybe all of you data before the drive completely fails. In some cases your hard drive may have just been erased or reformatted by a failed operating system recover attempt by a user; Fairport Computers offers a wide range of data recovery options for PC, Laptop, and network servers. We may be able to recover deleted emails, files, music, and/or pictures that had accidentally deleted.
Q. I reformatted my hard drive by accident, can you recover my files?
A. In some cases file can be recovered after a full disk reformat on hard drives, floppy drives, and/or USB thumb drives. The attempted recovery process is billed on the hour and by the type of recovery required.
Q. My computer no long powers on, how much will it cost to fix?
A. Because there are several reasons a computer will no longer power on, it is almost impossible to give an estimate for repair cost without actually seeing the computer. A technician will look at the system when you bring it in, but can only look for quick fixes like power supply failure. This initial evaluation is always free, but some systems will require extensive component testing beyond just a power supply; general fee for desktops is $59.99 and laptops $85.00. This process may reveal another inexpensive repair or even a larger repair; such as motherboard and/or processor. Testing is a lengthy process and may require up to several days or even a week+ if replacement parts are not readily available and have to be special ordered.
Q. Does Fairport Computers offer on-site repair service?
A. Yes, the general cost for a home visit is $65 hour; with a one hour minimum. For business the change is $85 hour with a one hour minimum. Unlike most companies there is never a ‘travel charge’ or ‘on-site fee’. For most customers; a credit card is required to schedule an on-site appointment. Fairport Computers no longer accepts personal check.
Q. My computer is infected with spyware and/or viruses, can this be done on-site?
A. Yes, but most spyware and/or virus infection removal can take from hours to days to completely remove the infection. It is more cost effective to bring the system in to the retail store or take advantage of our system pickup/delivery service. Pickup and delivery of the system has a basic charge of $30. The actual repair cost, in addition to the delivery pickup/delivery cost, will be based on work require and parts, if needed. All required repair will be approved by the customer before work can begin, this eliminates surprises in overall repair cost.
Q. If I call every hour will be system be done sooner?
A. No, systems are worked on continuously until completed. If your system is being cleaned up for spyware and/or virus the system has to be scanned with a wide range of programs and removal tools that take time to run, dependant on, but not limited to, your current system speed, the severity of the infection, and the number of users on the system. (Each user’s profile has to be scanned individually to ensure complete infection removal, so each process has to be repeated per user.) In general it takes two to three days for most system with just one user, and sometimes less. In some cases up to a week and beyond depending on the three factors listed above. As soon as the system is completed the technician will call the contact number(s) that was left when the system was dropped off for service. Fairport Computers is not responsible for family members or house mates not relaying messages. We will make every attempt to contact you when the system is completed.
Q. If I brought my system in today, can it be fixed today?
A. The answer would depend on what is wrong with the system, if we are reloading the system clean with just the operating system – yes. If the system needs minor repairs – then yes. If the system requires spyware and/or virus cleanup – probably not; since it usually take at least two to three days or up to a week to clean badly infected, slow computers. For system that require ‘special order’ parts, no. Depending on the parts and where they are shipped from, it will take from 2 to 3 days and sometime longer, just to get the parts before the repairs can begin.
Q. Is my computer worth repairing or should I buy a new one?
A. Fairport computers can help you decide to either repair/upgrade/replace your current system. Each system is different and everyone's needs are different. If repair/upgrade costs are near the cost of a new computer, FC may suggest to let us custom build a new system that will exceed your expectations but stay within your budget. If your system is pretty current, sometimes the cost to repair is better than replacement. In some cases, if a new or newer system would not be of any benefit, repairs may be the best option. FC can help you make the best choice for you. |
